My Lesson Creations

This is a place where I will post my favorite lessons plans. While I am still new at this teaching thing I find creating lesson plans a fun way to exercise my creativity.

Dynamics-Basics

About the Lesson: Dynamics are the glue that holds music together. They help show the emotions a meaning of the piece. It is very important that students know and truly understand the Dynamic symbols.

End Point: What are dynamics and how do they function?

Evidence of Learning: The students will know and understand the purpose and function of different dynamics and will be able to demonstrate this knowledge by applying it to their current concert literature.

Opening: I start all of my classes by greeting my students at the door. Once the class begins we sing Warm Ups followed by a sight reading activity. This process helps them gain and retain focus for the day.

Buy-In: I always stress the value and importance of the emotional value of music.

I have also found this amazing Rap about Dynamics that students LOVE.

Prior Knowledge: As with all lessons I like to feel out what the kids might already know. My lessons tend to overlap with the same things that are going on in Band so I always have a few kids that are a little ahead and can help out the others.

New Content: I show the students the different symbols and explain how they function in music by comparing the symbol meaning to speech. For example Piano which means Soft in music I would equate to a whisper in speech.

Processing Activities: I have the students speak the phrase "Hello how are you?" at varying dynamic levels. I also teach different movements to represent different levels.

Mastery: The students will apply this knowledge to our concert pieces.

Encoding: As with most things repetition is our best friend in choir.

Closure: I close each day by discussing the days lesson and asking if they have any other questions. Since this is a one day lesson I also give a preview of what is to come the next day.

As always I end the class by letting them put their folders up by section and leave the class by row.
